A Midsummer Night
Last night we had the pleasure of indulging in a favorite summer tradition: attending The Public Theater’s free Shakespeare in the Park with friends.
We missed this season’s controversial Julius Caesar, but made it back to New York in time for A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The Delacorte Theater, nestled within leafy Central Park, was transformed into an even greener forest fairyland, and as the (real) moon rose over the whimsical set, the effect was truly magical.
This production has a lot to recommend it: Superb acting. Wonderful costumes. Hilarious moments. But mostly—as is the case in every good modern staging of a Shakespeare play—the timelessness of the words.
Did Shakespeare have any idea audiences would be laughing at his comedies 400 years later?
We hope so.
