The Met Breuer Opens
Being an artist is about “collaborating, and listening, and building things together,” says Vijay Iyer, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s performing artist-in-residence. “I think of myself as a professional listener. Even as a musician, I think of what I do as primarily about listening. It’s not about playing, per se, I mean that’s obviously a big part of it, but listening is at the center of it.”
We talked to the fascinating Iyer (he’s a pianist, a composer, a Harvard professor, a Genius Grant recipient…) while writing copy for MetLiveArts’s 2015-16 season. This month
Iyer is performing all day, every day (during museum hours) in the Lobby Gallery of the newly opened Met Breuer (former home of the Whitney Museum).
The Met’s wildly creative general manager of concerts and lectures, Limor Tomer, curates the museum’s wide-ranging performing arts offerings. Check out the MetLiveArts Spring 2016 brochure to see what else is in store.
